January 2008

Expensive, and long term, efforts are being made to produce high tech items like jet engines, missiles and military electronics. At the current rate of progress, Chinese military technology will match that of the United States in a decade or so. I think that second estimate is more than a little hysterical. The Chinese are putting Russian engines into fourth generation fighters while the United States operates the world's only fifth generation fighter, the F-22, and Boeing is even talking of a sixth generation fighter (though there's already some healthy skepticism at the Danger Room). Still, it sounds like the Chinese are doing a little sandbagging in the CASS study--it closes with this: In its report, CASS also proposed the new concept of "Peace Dove Strategy" to stress its peaceful development policy.

Kranz: Sharing a hunger to serve

I'm not sure if the tally of Carolyn Downs' good works has been completed. But now she will take leave of The Banquet, Sioux Falls' soup kitchen, a place where the homeless and underprivileged find food and sometimes shelter. Not long after I moved to Sioux Falls, I found The Banquet to be one of the Argus Leader's de facto missions, with staffers periodically lending a hand to this more-than-worthy cause. Downs started as assistant director, eventually inheriting the reins of leadership from Jo Gross, its first director. Not long after I began my occasional duties at this house of hope, I inherited pole position, the first server in the food line, dishing out the evening meal to the tired, the homeless, the lonely, far more than I could ever imagine in this affluent city.

World hunger increasing: UN

The United Nations says rising food prices are causing people in more countries to go hungry. The director of the UN's World Food Programme, Josette Sheeran, says hunger is on the rise in countries such as Indonesia, Yemen and Mexico. She says Egypt has just widened its food rationing system after two decades and Pakistan has reintroduced ration cards after many years. UN figures show that food prices rose by 40 per cent last year because of high oil prices and rising demand from developing countries. - BBC Tags: international-aid-and-trade, poverty, egypt, indonesia, mexico, pakistan, yemen .

HAREWOOD HAS HUNGER BACK

Nigel Reo-Coker believes Aston Villa team-mate Marlon Harewood can go from strength to strength during the final third of the season after rediscovering his "hunger" for the game. Reo-Coker knows all about Harewood's qualities from their time together as team-mates at West Ham after the striker moved from Notts Forest. The 27-year-old netted 16 league goals for the Hammers during the 2005-2006 campaign and moved to Villa Park last summer. Harewood has had to endure a frustrating start to his Villa career and been down the pecking order behind Gabriel Agbonlahor and John Carew. But he has made a big impact as a substitute in recent weeks and his introduction in the 4-1 win over Newcastle 10 days ago was hailed as a major factor after Martin O'Neill's side had trailed at half-time.

Thousands Race Against Hunger

LEXINGTON (WLTX) – On Saturday morning, the heavy fog didn't stop thousands of runners and walkers to participate in the 8th annual Lexington's Race Against Hunger. WLTX was proud to be one of the sponsors of the 10K run, 5K fitness walk and one mile fun run that were held. Lexington's Race Against Hunger was established in 2001 with the goal of increasing awareness of world hunger and raising funds to benefit the hungry locally and worldwide. All of the profit from today's event will go towards this. In the past 7 years, LRAH has donated over $132,000 to charity. Today's event hopes to raise over $30,000 to add to that total. Today's races were also held in memory of Curt Owens, Jr., an avid runner who died suddenly on December 7, 2003.

Local teens join campaign to fight hunger

Local teens join campaign to fight hunger Delores Flynn / The Detroit News AUBURN HILLS -- Feeling what it's like to be truly hungry has been an eye opening experience for Reagan Chaung. "Before a meal you typically think 'I'm really hungry,' but when you think about it you're really not that hungry at all because there are people out there who are starving. Not eating for 30 hours is just a tiny little snippet of what it's like for them every single day. It's a really awakening experience," said Chaung, 17, a member of Oakland Chinese Church in Auburn Hills Chaung is one of 3,500 youth in Metro Detroit joining 500,000 children across the country in the 2008 World Vision 30 Hour Famine to raise awareness and money to fight global hunger this weekend. One child dies roughly every six second due to hunger-related illnesses.

Elementary Students Fight Hunger

On February 21st they hosted the Empty Bowls Fundraiser. Guests chose from about 400 bowls made by the students and were served a meal of soup and bread. The purpose of the event is to remind people that while their bowl is filled with warm soup, there are millions of people whose bowls are empty. "I want them to learn there is hunger around the world and that people are starving and this money will be donated to soup kitchens around Minot," says Jimmy Stillerman, a 5th Grade student at Edison. "Awareness of the needs of other people. We talk a lot about instilling the spirit of giving in students and children. I don`t know what we really need to do that so much. I think they have that need to help other people. We just have to facilitate it a little bit," says Rob Anderson, an art teacher at Edison Elementary.

Tiny taste makes Newman hunger for big leagues

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Josh Newman got that little taste of the show, and he’s hooked, wants more, wants to be a part of it again, even if it’s only a little part. The Colorado Rockies’ 24-year-old left-handed pitcher played in all of two games, two total innings, during the Rockies’ late-season run in 2007. Those six outs were enough. "Being up there, that atmosphere, it’s just something you can never explain," Newman said, sitting at his locker in Hi Corbett Field, site of the Rockies’ spring training camp. "That’s what I want to get back to. I want to help this team, even if it’s just a little part, but I want to help this team not just get to the World Series, but win it." You can’t do that in Colorado Springs, which is where, unless Newman has an amazing spring, he will start the season.

This Valentine's Day, Kiss Hunger Goodbye

(CSRwire) LITTLE ROCK, Ark., Feb. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- What heart could resist the big eyes of a dairy cow, the precious baaaaa of a lamb, or the silky coat of a llama? Of course, presenting such a critter to your sweetheart on Valentines Day would likely be a shock, impractical, or downright ridiculous. But if the gesture came in the form of a cute animated e-card, or a lovely print card supplied by world hunger organization Heifer International, explaining how this gift will lift someone in need to self-reliance, you just might get lucky. In fact, Heifer predicts you'll hear more of "Awwww that's so sweet," than you'd get with traditional roses or chocolates. The Kiss Hunger Goodbye Valentine card from http://www.heifer.org goes to your sweetheart, and the gift goes to someone who will receive education in basic veterinary skills, sustainable farming techniques that improve the environment, and economic development based on shared community values, ensuring the success of your gift to make a lasting difference.
